South Dakota State University's Green Chemistry Education Certificate Program

by Kate Anderson -

Coming Spring 2021!

The Green Chemistry Education Certificate Program will be designed to be completely online and will consist of 12 credits: each of the two Beyond Benign classes will be three credits, our three credit CHEM 779 (Chemistry Teaching Strategies, see below), and a series of three one-credit safety courses (safety practices, chemical storage and waste disposal, and chemical hygiene plans and safety assessments).

Course credit fees for Beyond Benign's courses may count towards and be applied to the SDSU credit and registration fees for the program.

Green chemistry is the science of creating safe, energy efficient, and non-toxic processes and products that provide sustainable solutions for the environmental problems facing our society today. Green chemistry education must be integrated into the way we teach scientists from the earliest ages. This course will provide a more in-depth dive into the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry to practice green chemistry pedagogy and procedures in their classrooms.

Students will review green chemistry technology analysis through the study of Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge winning projects, gain an understanding of how to incorporate toxicology into their curriculum, and delve into the application of green chemistry to student STEM activities and inquiry projects

Green Chemistry is the science of creating safe, energy efficient and non-toxic products and processes and offers a concrete path towards solving the environmental problems our society faces today.

This course begins with an introduction to the 12 principles of green chemistry and then concentrates on the exploration and creation of green chemistry lesson plan materials. Educational resources that are proven vehicles for bringing green chemistry concepts to high school students are introduced. These lesson plans are designed to integrate into current curriculum and meet national education standards in science and connecting disciplines.

The materials are designed for high-tech, low-tech
and no-tech implementation so that teachers with
varying resources have an avenue for implementation.
